PERU GENERAL INFORMATION
Peru is located in the middle west coast of South America, between the 81º 191’ 35” and 68° 30’ 11’ of west longitude and from the 0º 01’ 48” to 18º 21’ 05” of South latitude. It’s land is cross from the South to north by the Andean cordillera and has three natural regions. Coast which is a long and narrow desertic with several and beautiful valleys. The mountain (sierra) is formed by several valleys and high mountains. Jungle which is part of the great amazonic jungle. Peru has 84 of the 145 zones of life over the world. Politically Peru is divided into 24 departments and the Constitutional Province of Callao.
Territorial extension
Peru has an extension of 1’285,216 km², 52% of it’s population live in the coast, 36.9% in the mountains and 11% in the jungle.
Limits
By the north with Ecuador and Colombia with 1,529 kms and 1,506 kms of borders, by the east with Brazil and Bolivia with 2,822 kms and 1,047 kms of borders, by the south with Chile with only 349 kms of borders and by the west all it’s extension 3080 kms are by the Pacific Ocean.
Capital City
The capital city is Lima, located in the middle coast with an altitude of 153 m over the level sea.
Languages
The official language is spanish but 20% of population speaks quechua and aymara, ancients languages spoke by the lnkas
Currency
The local currency is the “Nuevo Sol”. The coins are 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1, 2 and 5 new soles. The bills are 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 new soles.
Government
Peru is a democratic republic. The actual president is Dr. Alan Garcia Perez (2006-2011). The government is elected for five years.
Population
The population of Peru is about 26 millions people with a life expectation of 69 years. 72.3% of population is located in urban zones and 27.7% in rural zones. Lima has almost 7.5 million people (included Callao 29.2%). The main cities have the 22.2% of the population, 20.9% is located in other urban zones and 27.7% in the rural zones.
